Hair Care From The Inside Out

June 21, 2008 By: PF Category: Hair Treatments No Comments →

Most individuals recognize the fact that your hair is “dead” or at least not living however this is not entirely true. The follicle that produces your hair is part of your skin which is the biggest organ of your body, therefore it is directly affected by your lifestyle, your habits and your diet.

Consumers are constantly looking for the next great hair product that promises to fix all their hair woos without realizing that building a healthy foundation is extremely important. Experimenting with different products is perfectly fine however many of us over look the fact that our hair health is determined by our over all health.

In order for our body to function properly we must provide it with specific nutritional factors. For instance in order for our bones to stay healthy and strong we must take in a minimum amount of calcium and vitamin D. This premise is the same if we expect our body to produce strong healthy hair, there are certain requirements that must be met that has nothing to do with the type or brand of hair products we choose to use.

1. Ribolflavin also known as Vitamin B2 is essential to the body and must be consumed on daily basis as it is water soluble meaning that it is not stored in the body. The functions of Vitamin B2 are numerous and include energy metabolism, red blood cell production, enzyme reactions, vision, health of skin (including hair and nails), and functions as an antioxidant. This vitamin can be found in dairy products, whole grains, eggs, nuts, meat, fortified cereals and dark green vegetables.

2. Biotin or Vitamin B5 is also a water soluble vitamin which must be ingested on a daily basis. It is important for the synthesis of fat, glycogen, and amino acids, enzyme reactions, healthy hair and nails and DNA replication. This vitamin can be found in liver, yeast, nuts, egg yolks, soybeans, cauliflower and mushrooms.

3. Deficiencies of Folic acid (Vitamin B9) can lead to hair loss. This water soluble vitamin can be found in foods such as citrus fruits, fortified cereals, nuts, legumes, and dark leafy vegetables.

4. Deficiencies in Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) can lead to scurvy, this has not been a concern for many years but cases are becoming more common. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, and red peppers.

5. Iodine is necessary in making thyroid hormones, and symptoms of an under active thyroid can often be seen in hair health. Hair may be dry, brittle, limp, or in some cases thinning. It should be noted however these symptoms may also indicate an over active thyroid. Iodine can be found in salt, seafood, and sea vegetables such as kelp. This is becoming a greater issue because the use of salt has greatly decreased in an effort to combat high blood pressure.

6. Iron deficiencies can also cause hair loss therefore ensure that you are getting enough in your diet. Iron can be found in many fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish and fortified breads and cereals.

We all know that exercise is not only good for our waist line but also our over all health and this is again important to hair health. Exercise improves hair health by increasing circulation.

Smoking is bad for us and we are all aware of the dangers of this habit but did you know that smokers are four times more likely to have grey hair then their non smoking counterparts. Smokers are also more prone to hair loss.

Healthy hair is one of the indicators of over all health. Take care of your body as a whole and you will have strong healthy hair.

Itchy Lice

June 19, 2008 By: PF Category: Hair Treatments No Comments →

There may be nothing more mortifying for a young child then to be sent home with head lice. Many people label children with lice as dirty, but this isn’t always the case. Usually there is indeed one unclean household that is the cause of an outbreak, but most of the rest of the kids that get it from the first child usually have no idea where it came from, and it might have just meant they hung their coat in the wrong place. Head lice are tricky, as my family learned the hard way when I was young, and sometimes they are almost impossible to get rid of, even when they aren’t coming from your own house.

We never had a lot, but we always had enough, and we certainly had a nice house that my mother kept clean. She was picky about the house and she was picky about us. I don’t believe we would have ever gotten head lice when we were young had it not been for one particular family that didn’t seem to care. My brother was in second grade and there was a boy in his class that brought it to school. That boy infected almost his entire class with head lice in one day. In turn, my brother came home and gave it to me.

At the time, the school called to tell my mom that he had picked it up from a classmate, though they didn’t say which one. My mom treated him for head lice and then treated me. I was a problem, because I had long, curly hair and it took her forever to get through it. A few days later my brother came home with it again, and it came from the same kid. The rest of the parents were struggling to keep their children free of head lice while this poor little boy had parents that apparently didn’t care. They weren’t even treating him.

This went on for a few weeks until the other parents were furious. They told the little boy’s parents he was not allowed back in school until they were sure the head lice was gone. By this time, my head hurt from the treatments and I was more than willing to look up the parents of this boy and scratch their eyes out. Because of the severity of the problem, my mom had to end up using kerosene on our heads, and my beautiful hair had to be cut off. I can tell you almost twenty-five years later my hair has never been the same. Though I can’t blame the little boy who had the head lice, as he was just a little kid, I can certainly blame the parents who ignored the problem. May they itch forever.

Funky Hair Color

June 18, 2008 By: PF Category: Hair Treatments No Comments →

The hair on the top of our heads is something of a barometer for our personalities. A person with a conservative, medium brown hair cut probably won’t be seen in a punk rock club in the middle of a mosh pit. However, sometimes we all have a yearning to do something crazy, to jump out of the normal hairstyle box we’ve put ourselves in to something wild and crazy. Temporary funky hair color is a fun way to do just that.

Although many stores sell hair dye kits that you can apply yourself at home, you might want to consider visiting a salon to have the funky hair color put in. Even if it’s the type that washes out with just a shampoo, it does need to be applied correctly to guarantee that it will indeed simply rinse out. You also don’t want to be sporting a neon green or bright pink scalp for weeks. Having a stylist apply the funky hair color will help minimize the risk of these things happening.

Another plus about using the temporary variety is that you can experiment with different looks. Maybe you’ve always wondered what you’d look like with royal blue hair. With funky hair color you can have the color applied and see how you look. It’s so easy to rinse out that you won’t have to worry about carrying that look around with you for months.

Halloween seems to be a time of year when people go all out looking for crazy and wacky hairstyles. Many of these styles involve the use of funky hair color. In fact, no one really gives a second look to a young man with green hair near the end of October. The same can be said for a woman with bright orange locks. It’s during this time of year that funky hair color becomes a very popular trend.

If you’re young enough to enjoy experimenting with your look, consider changing your hair color. Although you can certainly turn to the standard blonde, brown or black, adding a funky hair color to your life can also bring on the excitement. One thing is for certain about wearing a flashy color in your hair is that you’ll no longer blend in with the crowd.

Life is about living and if you have enough confidence to carry an outrageous hairstyle consider taking the plunge and having it done. Remember that hair always grows back and the color eventually fades so even if you don’t like it, it’s never a lifetime commitment.

Why Layered Hair Cuts Are So Popular

June 13, 2008 By: PF Category: Hair Treatments No Comments →

We all know how popular layered hair cuts are and have been for years now and there are many reasons that can be used in order to explain the popularity of the layered hair cuts. First of all, layered hair cuts are great because you can do many different things with your hair if you have one of the layered haircuts. This is great because really regardless of whether you have short or long hair, you still have a lot of options in regards to what you can do with it.

More About Layered Hair Cuts

Basically this hairstyle fad began with Jennifer Aniston, who had the layered haircut herself and when people saw it they loved it, and then it caught on incredibly quickly from there. The other great part about this particular haircut is the fact that it really does look great on anyone, and so you do not have to have a certain hair type or face shape in order for it to work well on you.

Just make sure that you go to a good hairdresser if you want to get this done to your hair, so that you know that they will not mess it up. This should not be too big of a worry though, because the layered cuts are actually easier for hairdressers to do than any other type of cut.

There are so many different things that you can do with your hair if you get it cut this way, and for instance you can just wash it and let it air dry, leave it a bit tousled and go with the messy look, or you can blow dry it straight and pretty it up with some barrettes if you want. The options are basically endless, and if you want you can do a bit of research on your own in order to learn more about the various styles that you can go with if you have a layered hair cut.

The layered cut hair style is especially great if you have long hair, because then you can put some of it back and leave some of it down, and play around with the shorter pieces around your face, and this looks very elegant and yet casual at the same time. There are also many more options when you have long hair, and so if you do not have long hair now you may want to consider growing it out.

Beautiful And Stylish Hair Highlights Revive A Youthful Look

June 07, 2008 By: PF Category: Hair Treatments No Comments →

Most people strive to remain as youthful as they can, even when entering into their middle-age years. Taking care of one’s self with daily exercise and good nutrition are wonderful ways that people can maintain a young and vibrant appearance and overall wellness as well. Yet, many people, women especially, like to design new cut hair styles for themselves in order to make them feel younger and prettier. Getting hair highlights is one popular way that many women and some men can cover up the first sign of aging that many of them have…gray hair. Hair highlights help to disguise the gray and add texture and body to otherwise dull hair. There are many ways to highlight one’s hair, and all of them can be tried to find the one that fits you.

What To Expect When Receiving Hair Highlights

Going to the beauty salon for haircut is an enjoyable and relaxing experience for many women, as they look forward to this time and talking and pampering. Prices can be quite expensive in some salons, yet more reasonable in others. Often, hair highlights are given to women both young and old alike, yet it seems that younger women tend to request them more often. Older women tend to completely color all of their hair in order to cover a great amount of gray or simply for a different or more stylish look. Hair highlights can be done with a cap method, where small chunks of hair are pulled through tiny holes and then colored with a paste. The color is then left to “set” on the hair for a certain amount of time under a dryer until the color is ready.

When the color paste is ready to be removed, the cap is taken off and the hair is rinsed and/or washed as well. Another way of applying hair highlights is by using the foil method. In this method, the hair color is applied on a small clump of hair spread on a piece of foil. This foil is then gently folded up and left to dry on the hair. When the color is complete, the foil is removed and the hair is washed and rinsed. Highlights are generally a lighter color than one’s original hair coloring and give a lighter or wispier look to the hair. Sometimes, hair highlights are very contrasting with the person’s own hair color, and at other times the highlights are very subtle and look quite natural. The choice as to what color to pick totally lies in a person’s own unique style and taste. There are hundreds of shades and brands to choose from. If a person is truly brave, they may even want to highlight their own hair with a color kit from a retail store. Yet, care should be taken when doing this, as mistakes can easily happen which can bring about an especially “bad hair day” experience. Overall, hair highlights are trendy and stylish to receive no matter what your age.

Healthy Hair Vitamins

June 05, 2008 By: PF Category: Hair Treatments No Comments →

There a number of different specific hair vitamins and minerals that can play a major role in helping a person have a healthy head of hair. If a person does not have sufficient hair vitamins then the deficiencies can lead to thinning hair or even total baldness in the most severe cases. The fact is that the state of a person’s hair reflects the overall condition of their body. Extra hair vitamins are likely to be needed if a person is generally unwell or is undernourished as their hair will show damage too and may even stop growing.

Some of the most important hair vitamins that a person needs to have healthy hair include B6, biotin, inositol and folic acid. The best way to ensure that a person receives enough of these essential hair vitamins are for them to be taken as vitamin supplements. It is not just hair vitamins that are necessary for healthy hair though as there are a number of minerals that are essential, including magnesium, sulphur, silica and zinc.

The most essential hair vitamin is vitamin a but the best form of this is to include in the diet is beta-carotene. This is because the hair vitamin A can be toxic if consumed in large quantities but beta-carotene has no such problems and is converted by the body into vitamin A that can be used to promote healthy hair. Of course, vitamin A is not just a hair vitamin, it is also needed for a number of other functions including normal growth of bones, skin, nails and the protective sheath surrounding nerve fibers.

Protein is another essential hair vitamin. This is because hair itself is essentially protein. The amount of this hair vitamin that a person consumes in their diet can affect the hair directly. If a lot of protein is included in a person’s diet then this hair vitamin will lead to improved hair growth and a far fuller head of hair. However, a person who has a diet that is lacking in this hair vitamin will suffer from thinning hair and slow hair growth.

Of course, it is not just hair vitamins and minerals that are needed to ensure that a person has healthy, strong hair. There are a number of researchers who have found that there are direct links between the overall health of a person and the condition of their hair. If a person is under a lot of stress or suffers from a lack of sleep then their hair is also likely to suffer and it is likely that their diet will not provide enough hair vitamins to counter these effects. Hair vitamin and mineral supplements can be the solution to weak and damaged hair.
